Samoa Independence

                       What are Independences?
Independence is a fact or state of being independent.

In 1900 it was a strange day in Samoa.
The people of Samoa governed their country
in ways that were very different from those papalangi.

The German governor dismisses the members
of the fono a faipule. He says they should only
come to Apia when he calls them.
In response to recent attacks on traditional
ways, samoan leaders - especially
Lauaki Namulauulu Mamoe - find a new way
to resist german rule: the mau a pule movement.

In 1914 8500 Samoan’s died in the influenza
epidemic that is sweeping across the globe.

Samoa is known because Savaii island people said
to be Hawaiki, the Polynesian homeland. Samoan
culture is central to Polynesian life, and its styles
of music, dance, and visual art have gained renown
throughout the Pacific islands and the world.
